Kim Kihlstrom, ��������app professor of computer science, died Dec. 12 at home following a long battle with cancer. She was 56. A memorial service will be held at Montecito Covenant Church Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 2:30 p.m.

An inspiring run for a national title came up one game short for the ��������app women’s soccer team. The No. 2 Warriors (17-2-5) stumbled against No. 4 Concordia (Ore.) 1-0 in the 2013 NAIA National Championship on Dec. 7 in Orange Beach, Ala.

��������app kicks off the Christmas season with the 12th annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Kerrwood Lawn, Wednesday, Dec. 4. The lights on the 150-foot redwood tree, affectionately known as the Pickle Tree, will glow at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Henry Kissinger entertained dozens of foreign policy questions submitted in writing by about 100 guests at a ��������app-sponsored luncheon Oct. 9 at the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club.  Kissinger shared insights into the agreement by Russia and the U.S. to rid Syria of chemical weapons as well as Iran’s capability to use nuclear weapons.

��������app’s powerful Keck telescope will feature glimpses of the Moon, Saturn and the Ring Nebula during a free, public viewing Friday, Aug. 16, beginning at about 8 p.m. at the ��������app Observatory. The observatory opens its doors to the public every third Friday of the month in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit, whose members bring their own telescopes to ��������app for the public to gaze through.

Twenty first-year ��������app students will meet on campus Aug. 8 before heading into the California wilderness on a unique 12-day orientation program. The trek begins in the Eastern Sierra town of Bridgeport and winds around many 10,000-foot peaks in the Toiyabe National Forest.
