What is app In The Arts (WITA)?
app In The Arts (WITA) works to bring the app community into contact with the performing arts in our community. WITA will be providing FREE tickets to a range of performances in Santa Barbara and the world over the course of the academic year. If you are interested in taking advantage of the offerings of WITA this year, please read on!

What Kind of Events are part of the WITA program?
The events range from professional live performances offered by the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA), the Santa Barbara Symphony, State Street Ballet, some of the concerts sponsored by the UCSB lecture Art and Lecture series, to films and app produced, and events in the city.

How does this work?
About once a month, a WITA invitation will go out to the campus community. Those interested can go by the Voskuyl Library circulation desk to pick up two FREE tickets.

  • The first day or two for students
  • A day or two for faculty and staff along with students
  • The day or two prior to an event the “2 ticket” limit per person may be lifted if tickets are still available

One of the goals of WITA is to encourage faculty, student and staff interaction, so tickets are available to all on a first-come-first-served basis. You may sign out up to two tickets when you go to pick them up. Our hardest and firmest rule is that you USE the tickets you sign out. If you find you cannot use a ticket that you have acquired, it is extremely important that you:

  • get it to someone who can use it
  • return it to the library in time for someone else to sign it out
  • get it to the box office prior to the performance so that it can be resold

The reasons for this imperative are many, starting with the good stewardship of resources. Individuals who sign out tickets and do not use them may find their access limited for future events. Arts agencies do record if the tickets are used and may restrict our ability to access tickets in the future if they are wasted.

Students are welcome to inquire about support for tickets to concerts and events for which tickets are not otherwise provided in a given month. These requests will be particularly welcome a few weeks in advance as they relate to various forms of “art” music, dance and theater performances that they have formed a group to attend that includes a faculty member. For example if 4 or 5 students wanted to attend the performance of mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile at Campbell Hall and a history professor wanted to go and help understand where bluegrass fits into an American cultural context, that is something WITA would be pleased to provide tickets for. Tickets for a midnight screening of the newest Star Wars movie as a date night, on the other hand, is likely not something that WITA would be interested in sponsoring. Requests may be sent to me at any time. Typically students will be authorized to purchase tickets and bring a receipt in for reimbursement of their purchase, but other arrangements may also be made. Please give me as much time as possible and as much information as possible regarding the event when making special requests. Resources are limited and some effort will be made to provide support for fall, spring and May terms.
