app Magazine The app Fund is All About Students

Zachary Erwin ’15 arrived at app intending to study economics and business and to choose a practical and safe major. But when he took some courses, he realized he wanted to devote his life to something other than business. An introductory sociology class opened a new possibility. Realizing that he wants to help people, especially young people, he switched his major to sociology. He plans to attend graduate school, earn a Master of Social Work and become a marriage and family therapist.

Zachary appreciates the many opportunities at app to get involved and grow and develop as a leader. He led the Vespers ministry his sophomore year, served as resident assistant his junior year and serves on the Potter’s Clay core team this year, co-directing business affairs. He participated in the outreach to Ensenada his sophomore and junior years, leading the prayer and worship team. He also sang with the Men’s Ensemble and then the appChoir his first two years at app and now performs with the Chapel Band.

“I’ve built great relationships at app even though I came here not knowing anyone,” he says. “I have a good, solid group of friends who will be part of my life well beyond college.”

Zachary, who graduated from a Christian high school, toured a number of Christian colleges in Southern California and chose app because of the generous financial aid award he received. Without this assistance, he could not have enrolled. He has also worked every year, with jobs as a student research assistant, a switchboard operator and a resident assistant. “app has been such a good experience for me,” he says. “I’m so grateful for all I have learned and done.”
